Follow the below steps to help you build your personalized cartoon with lots of animation. However, Synfig Studio is known nationwide to be a free application and thus an open-source one. It enables and helps users build their personal cartoons and add other features to them.
In addition, it also offers the best and most advanced features, such as bone-based rigging, inverse kinematics, and, above all, support for a wide range of other file formats.
Step 1
Ensure to download and install Synfig Studio, this can be downloaded from the official website, that is, you can also Google it, hit the download button, and install.
Step 2
Creating a New Project
- Launch the application
- Click on the file command from the menu bar
- Click on New project
- You will also need to set the canvas sizes as well. Optionally, make your own choice as in sizes
- For a simple cartoon, select and pick a canvas size of 1920×1080
- Set the duration to 128 frames
Step 3
Creating and Importing of Your Assets
Synfig allow users to apply lots of features and it has several drawing tools but most users prefer to create their assets in another program and import them into Synfig.
- Use any program of your choice
- Using Inkscape or even GIMP
- Create your character
- Set good and beautiful backgrounds
- Import them into Synfig, that is, through the file menu
- Click on Import.
Step 4
Animating your Assets
- Ensure to create keyframes (Keyframes are features or frames that change your animation, for instance, if you are animating a character walking, you might have a keyframe where the character is standing still, a keyframe where a character takes a step and additionally, a keyframe where the same character is standing still again.) In addition, Synfig Studio automatically creates the frames in between these aforementioned keyframes, this is what is called in computing tweening.
Step 5
How to add sound
- A user can add a sound by importing audio files
- Files such as mp3 and .wav can be added successfully
Step 6
Rendering your animation
- After completing other animation features and sound successfully
- Click and apply on the render portion
Note
Synfig supports lots of file and video formats, such as .mp4 and even .webm. In addition, remember, that creating a cartoon can be a very complex process, especially if you are new to animation. Continue to practice more and execute new features as much as you can.
