Steps formatting an SD Card

Formatting in computing or ICT is the process of preparing a disk/disc for storage and writing or reading of data or information. Formatting in other words turned out to be clearing the content of the factory rest of a device, known to be either a flash drive, hard disk, CD/DVD/VCD or additionally SD Card.

There are many ways through which components or a device or storage device can be formatted. However, caution should be taken when formatting whether a new drive or an old one. Backing up all files is one of the first and foremost, thus regarding old drives or devices.

Steps formatting an SD Card

Follow the below steps when formatting an SD Card:

  • Launch the card formatted application or firmware(if any) or double click on my computer.
  • Connect your SD card to the computer using an SD Card Reader( Laptop or Computer)
  • The SD card formatted window will appear, here, you can see list of available SD Cards on you computer
  • Select the card you want to format from the available drop down list.
  • Click to select the card button. This will mount the SD Card as a removable drive on your computer.
  • After the card is mounted, click on the Format Card button.
  • In the next window, click or choose the formatting speed according to your SD card. For SD cards, select Up to 10MB/s for the maximum speed
  • Check the Erase current data on the card checkbox to ensure that all data is completely erased from the SD card.
  • Once you made all the necessary selections, select and click on the format button. This will begin the formatting process.
  • A progress bar will appear indicating the completion of percentage of the formatting process. Please wait until the process is fully competed.

Note: Ensure to make sure its up to 100 percent before removing the drive. Your drive is now ready to be used.

In many other case, there is a shortcut to formatting an SD card, thus using the below steps:

  • Double click on My Computer Icon
  • Right click on the SD Card
  • Move the mouse pointer to the format button
  • Click on it
  • Click on default button
  • Select quick format
  • Click on start
  • Wait till formatting ends, thus up to 100% complete
  • Click on OK
