Software

Software is a simple set of instructions that tell the computer system what to do and how to perform that task, however, it can also be defined as the programs or codes that are installed in the computer system to perform a particular job. Software types have their own functions to perform.

Types of Software

There are two types, namely:

  • System Software and
  • Application Software

System Software

They are codes that are installed in the computer system to control other hardware components in the entire system. They have specific series of line of instructions that helps the application software to work and at the same time control other firm wares. The system software is also known as the Operating System(OS)

Examples of System Software:

  • Disk Operating System (DOS)
  • Ubuntu
  • Kubuntu
  • Fedora
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows NT
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 11
  • Windows 7
  • Kali
  • Mint
  • etc

Application Software

They are programs that are installed in the entire computer system to enable a user to perform a function or a task. They aid users in many different categories such as designing, building a database, working with letters or forms and other related tasks.

Examples of Application Software

  • Ms Word
  • Ms Excel
  • Ms Access
  • Paint
  • Notepad
  • Wordpad
  • Powerpoint
  • Publisher
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Print Sierra
  • Photoshop
  • Photoshine
  • Media Players (eg. VLC player, windows player, GOM Player, etc)
  • etc

In short, without the OS, no application software would be able to perform its tasks as required. However, all application software rest on the System Softare to enable users work efficiently.
