How to use the Bootrec.exe – solved!!!

Bootrec.exe is a command-line utility that can be used to troubleshoot and fix boot-related issues in Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. You can access this utility through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or by using the installation disc.

Here are some of the commands you can use with Bootrec.exe:

  1. bootrec /FixMbr – This command writes a Windows Vista and Windows 7 compatible MBR to the system partition.
  2. bootrec /FixBoot – This command writes a new boot sector to the system partition. It will write a Windows 7-compatible boot sector if your system is Windows 7, and so on.
  3. bootrec /ScanOs – This command scans the hard drives for any installations. It will also print installations that are not currently in the BCD.
  4. bootrec /RebuildBcd – This command scans for installations on your hard drive and allows you to select which to add to the BCD.

Here’s an example of how to use Bootrec.exe to fix boot issues:

  1. Boot your computer using the Windows installation disc or the WinRE disc.
  2. Makes sure you select your language and keyboard layout, and then click “Next.”
  3. Click “Repair your computer.”
  4. Ensure to highlight and select the Windows installation you want to repair, and then click “Next.”
  5. Click “Command Prompt.”
  6. Type the following command and press Enter:

bootrec /RebuildBcd

  1. Follow the prompts to add any missing Windows installations to the BCD.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:

bootrec /FixBoot

  1. Type the following command and press Enter:

bootrec /FixMbr

  1. Restart your computer to see if the boot issue has been fixed.

Note: You may need to use the /ScanOs command instead of /RebuildBcd if you have multiple Windows installations on your hard drive. Additionally, if you’re using a UEFI-based system, you may need to use different commands to fix the EFI bootloader.
