Deleting a file means removing the entire file name and its entire content from the computer system. However, when a file is deleted in the PC, it goes straight to the recycle bin; in other words, it may not go to the recycle bin but be completely deleted in the system. Deleting a file has a specific reason, namely, if the file is corrupted, has no use, or is not needed on the personal computer.
There are different ways of deleting a file in DOS and in Windows. Follow the below steps when deleting a file in Windows and in the Disk Operating System.
How to delete a file in Windows
- Right-click on the file you want to delete
- From the shortcut menu, select and click on delete
- Confirm by clicking on Yes to proceed with the deletion or click on No to decline
Alternatively
- Click on the file once using the primary mouse button
- Press the delete key from the keyboard
- Confirm by pressing the enter key or cancel by pressing the ESC key on the keyboard
How to delete a file in DOS
Load the disk operating system and perform the following tasks:
- Change to the C prompt using the CD..
- Clear the screen using the cls command
- Type del
- Press the spacebar
- Type the name of the file for example John
- Press the enter key
Congratulations! The file has been deleted.
