In computing, file extensions are known to be suffixes at the end of a file name that indicate the file’s general format and the kind or type of file or data it holds.
In addition, they usually consist of three or four or more letters following a dot ( . ). They are also known to have been of help to entire operating systems and even application software to identify how to open and process files.
PURPOSE OF FILE EXTENSIONS:
- For easy identification: The extensions help most users nationwide and other software to identify the file type, which can also indicate how the said file is to be used or opened and even what program is required to access it.
- For an association: Surprisingly, most operating systems use file extensions to associate files with other applications.
COMMONLY USED FILE EXTENSIONS:
.txt for plain texts .csv, known to be comma-separated value files, often used for spreadsheet application or files .md, this is for all markdown files .docx, also for Microsoft Word Document .pdf, for portable document format
