Differences between System Software & Application Software

In computing, every user has his or her own approach when it comes to software management. However, there are lots of software and other features in the computer, such as system applications and application software as well.

Software can be defined as a set of codes or instructions that are installed in the PC to enable full control over other applications and hardware resources associated with the computer system.

There are two types of computer software, namely:

  • SYSTEM SOFTWARE/OPERATIN SYSTEM SOFTWARE
  • APPLICATION SOFTWARE

The system software tells the computer hardware what to do and controls other resources in the entire computer system. It is also known as the operating system.

Few Examples of System Software

  1. Linux
  2. Ms Windows 10
  3. Ms Windows 11
  4. Ms Windows 2000
  5. Ms Windows 8
  6. Ms Windows 7
  7. Ms Windows XP
  8. Kubuntu
  9. Ubuntu
  10. Mint
  11. Fedora etc

Application software is the software installed in the computer system to enable a user to perform a specific task. 

Examples of Application software:

  1. Note Pad
  2. Word Pad
  3. Ms Word
  4. Ms Excel
  5. Ms Access
  6. Ms Powerpoint
  7. Ms Publisher
  8. Print Artist
  9. Paint
  10. Photoshop
  11. Corel Draw etc

With the aforementioned, there are many other applications that do the most suitable job offered or instructed by the user for the machine to do. Also, other examples of applications are in the market according to user needs and wants. These are just a few of the examples given.
