Differences between Functions and Formulas in MS-Excel

In Microsoft Excel, the terms functions and formulas are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different concepts.

Key Differences:

FUNCTIONS:

A function can be defined as the predefined calculations or operations that perform a specific taste for the user as demanded. It was noted that Excel has a wide range of built-in functions in the computer system. Meanwhile, the aforementioned has other mathematical operations such as statistical analysis, text manipulations and more.

COMMAND/ SYNTAX:

In Microsoft Excel, FUNCTIONS has a specific command that includes the function’s name and followed by parentheses. Inside the brackets or the parentheses, you provide or we have the arguments which are also known as the inputs.

Example of a FUNCTIONS

  • =SUM(A1:A10)
  • =IF(B8>75, "PASS", "FAIL")
  • =PRODUCT(F5,B2,C4)

FORMULAS:

A formula can be defined as the mathematical operations and or expressions that perform calculations using operators such as the minus(-), plus(+), product(*) and division(/).

COMMAND/ SYNTAX:

As stated earlier, to begin a function or a formula, you must or the user is required to apply the equal sign first(=) followed by the calculations or the expressions.

EXAMPLES OF FORMULAS:
