How to delete a file in Windows and DOS

Deleting a file means removing the entire file name and its entire content from the computer system. However, when a file is deleted in the PC, it goes straight to the recycle bin; in other words, it may not go to the recycle bin but be completely deleted in the system. Deleting a file has a specific reason, namely, if the file is corrupted, has no use, or is not needed on the personal computer.

There are different ways of deleting a file in DOS and in Windows. Follow the below steps when deleting a file in Windows and in the Disk Operating System.

How to delete a file in Windows

  • Right-click on the file you want to delete
  • From the shortcut menu, select and click on delete
  • Confirm by clicking on Yes to proceed with the deletion or click on No to decline

Alternatively

  • Click on the file once using the primary mouse button
  • Press the delete key from the keyboard
  • Confirm by pressing the enter key or cancel by pressing the ESC key on the keyboard

How to delete a file in DOS

Load the disk operating system and perform the following tasks:

  1. Change to the C prompt using the CD..
  2. Clear the screen using the cls command
  3. Type del
  4. Press the spacebar
  5. Type the name of the file for example John
  6. Press the enter key

Congratulations! The file has been deleted.
