Where do deleted files go after emptying the recycle bin

In computing or generally in Windows, deleted files do not completely vanish or disappear from the system when the recycle bin has been emptied. Files, folders, or other related files still exist on the HDD of the computer, but however marked as deleted. These deleted files are referred to as COPIES/PREVIOCE VERSIONS.

The files can easily be recovered and can also be used for other related useful tasks as required by the user.

How to recover or restore the deleted files from the recycle bin(Accidentally)

  1. Open Windows Explorer and move the pointer or navigate to the folder where the deleted file was located.
  2. Right-click on a space in the same folder explored; that is where the deleted files used to be.
  3. Select and click on the restore button (restore previous versions) from the context menu. This will open the previous versions tab in the property window given.

  4. Select and click on the command that is a version of the file you want to restore
  5. Click on the restore button.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that the time window for restoring these previous versions depends on your system settings. by default, Windows allows you to restore files deleted in the last hour.

How to increase the time or the hour

  • Right click My Computer Icon on desktop

  • Move the pointer to Properties and click on it

  • Select and click on Advance system settings

  • In the given window, Click on system protection tab

  • Choose the system drive (usually C:) from the drop-down menu given.

  • Click on the system settings button to modify the retention time.

Remember also that restoring a deleted file may not recover any unsaved data or information, so it’s crucial to keep backups of important files. Additionally, it is also important and worth noting that shadow copies can consume a significant amount of disk space , so you may want to disable them for specific drives if this is a concern.
